yAlexandra Lucas Coelho is an award-winning Portuguese writer who has published several books of fiction (E a Noite Roda (2012), O Meu Amante de Domingo (2014), Deus-dará (2016), A Nossa Alegria Chegou (2018)) and non-fiction (Oriente Próximo, Caderno Afegão, Viva México, Tahrir, Vai, Brasil).
Before giving up journalism to become a full-time writer, she worked as a reporter, as editor and as foreign correspondent in Jerusalem and Rio de Janeiro. Deus-dará, the novel in focus at this event, is set in an apocalyptic Rio de Janeiro, between the euphoria and chaos of the present, while navigating over 500 year of history of Portuguese-Brazilian relations. |
Dr Ana Frankenberg GarciaReader in Translation Studies
Dr Ana Frankenberg-Garcia is Reader in Translation Studies at the University of Surrey. Her research focuses on applied uses of corpora in writing, lexicography and translation. She was principal investigator of the open-access COMPARA parallel corpus of English and Portuguese fiction and chief editor of the Oxford Portuguese Dictionary (2015). She has been successful in creating needs-driven and pedagogically-relevant materials and identifying routes for the application of corpora in the classroom.
